The BASTET is a new band of old friends and comrades, founded by Hoff in 2012. The mission of the band is to explore the musical and spiritual territories carved out by the pioneers of avant-garde and free jazz in the 1960's and 70's, and to explore and develop their own paths along this trajectory.
Hoff met both Wiley and Green in the thriving Oakland/Bay Area jazz scene in the late 1990's. Together they worked in many projects together over the last two plus decades, logging thousands of hours of collective playing time. Mazzarella and Hoff met in Chicago in the late 2000's, and have been playing together steadily and often since as well.
The music of the Bastet is composed on the acoustic bass guitar by Hoff, giving himself the bulk of the written material as a horn player or guitarist might. The material ranges from harmolodic blowouts to ethereal ballads to chant-infused free-funk, all approached with a do it yourself ethos and anarchic energy . Collective individualism guides the group's playing, as well as a shared belief in the liberating spiritual and social possibilities of direct communication through disciplined improvisation.
